100 Worst Movies of All Time

It’s bad movies galore as we encounter the Rottenest of the Rotten: 100 movies that scored less than 5% with the critics on the Tomatometer!

You’re going to see lots of 0% movies, and there’s even more out there, but the ones on this list all have at least 20 reviews. We wanted to make sure the movies we’re “vouching” for as the worst ever have inflicted a minimum threshold of agony on critics. And the 20-review entry applies for every other movie on this list, and that includes the usual suspects of garbage cinema, like the deep space train wreck Battlefield Earth, the box office turkey (turtle?) The Master of Disguise, Netflix’s lazy western The Ridiculous 6, and flaccid softcore Killing Me Softly (which also makes a dubious appearance in the 200 best and worst erotic movies).

You may also note a number of significant stinkers are from the past 20 years. It’s not just because Uwe Boll was employed during this time period. And, by the way, he’s actually beat by dubious directing duo Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedberg, who have four movies on the list. Instead, it’s the fact more reviews are being written and collected than ever before, so today’s disasters have a better chance of vaunting over 20 reviews. (And for movies that share the same score, more reviews means you’re placed higher within the ranking.)

But fret not: Plenty of yesteryear’s bombs are here. After all, the decade that produced Mac & Me has a lot to account for. Some of the classic trash featured includes the soul-sucking Mortal Kombat: AnnihilationSpeed 2: Cruise Control (see what happens when you throw Keanu overboard?), off-the-deep-end Jaws: The Revenge, and prime directive-violating RoboCop 3.

What you won’t see: Some legendary bad movies like CatsBirdemic, and The Room, all of which have cleared at least a 10% Tomatometer. That’s right, they were too good. And Miami Connection and Plan 9 From Outer Space are actually Fresh!

No movie listed here achieved higher than 9% on the Tomatometer. As you might expect, the list features an inordinate number are remakes, the biggest offenders including The Fog, Jacob’s Ladder, Flatliners, and Martyrs. Same goes for sequels, as Jason, Jaws, the living dead, and an American werewolf make their appearances. Online campaigns involving Slusho and the mysterious 1-11-08 teaser title made for a gonzo opening weekend take, but significant drop-off suggests that many of you were waiting for DVD.

Two alternate endings, deleted scenes, commentary by director Matt Reeves and tons of Easter Eggs make Cloverfield a must-own. Now, figure out where to buy it, since no less than four special store-specific editions will be available, ranging from a Steelbook case (FYE and Suncoast), exclusive ringtone (K-Mart and Sears), “T.J. Charlie Wilson’s War

If modern, smarmy Tom Hanks doesn’t rub you the wrong way (why, oh why, couldn’t he have stopped at A League of Their Own??) and you’d like to see him charm the pants off of Julia Roberts’ conservative socialite, then perhaps there’s nothing stopping you from watching the true story of Texas Congressman Charlie Wilson and how he run the Soviets out of Afghanistan. But if you’re paying attention, you already know how that situation panned out.

Bonus Features:

There’s not much here, but a “Who Is Charlie Wilson?” featurette brings us up close and personal with not only Hanks, producer Aaron Sorkin, and director Mike Nichols (The Graduate), but also Wilson himself and his lover/benefactor, Joanne Herring.


The Savages

After a nine-year absence, Tamara Jenkins (Slums of Beverly Hills) wins us over again. This time, her angsty protagonists are middle-aged siblings (Best Actress nominee Laura Linney, Philip Seymour Hoffman) whose perfectly rancorous relationship is tested when they must deal with their increasingly senile, elderly father (Philip Bosco). One of last year’s critical darlings, The Savages deserves a wider audience for its bittersweet, acute observations — you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll see poop on the walls.

Bonus Features:

There’s not much to see here: extended scenes, interviews, and a “Behind the Scenes” photo gallery. But don’t let that deter you; give The Savages a try and you’ll likely end up touched. After all, who doesn’t love their parents?


The Orphanage

Orphaned by the Oscars (it was Spain’s official entry but didn’t make the final cut) and at the box office, here your chance to adopt this overlooked flick! In the Guillermo del Toro-produced stab at familial horror, Laura (Belen Rueda) moves into the orphanage she grew up in, but finds the house already occupied by spirits who seemingly kidnap her son. Come for the thrills, stay for the surprisingly tender story.

Bonus Features:

The Orphanage largely takes place in one setting, so location, location, location was undoubtedly a vital adage on set. Two DVD features reveal the efforts taken to bring Laura’s nightmarish world to life: the first, “When Laura Grew Up,” shows the filmmakers at work building the orphanage set. The second takes us into “Tomas’ Secret Room,” where the haunting climax of the movie takes place.

 


Starting Out in the Evening

I don’t know about you, but nothing gets our blood boiling like a good May-December pairing. Starting Out in the Evening boasts the match-up of sexagenarian Frank Langella and Lauren Ambrose (Six Feet Under) as an aging writer and grad student , respectively, who grow close in Andrew Wagner’s film about relational intimacy and alienation.

At last, the worst-reviewed movie of 2008 has arrived on DVD! (Okay, it’s only the worst so far, but we’re betting it can go the distance.) It takes something special to go 64 reviews without a single fresh rating, but this remake of Takashi Miike’s J-horror pic — in which people like Shannyn Sossamon get phone calls portending their imminent deaths — manages the feat. Even Uwe Boll’s Dungeon Siege: In the Name of the King notched a five percent Tomatometer. Bravo, One Missed Call. Bravo.

Bonus Features:

Here’s the kicker: there are no bonus features. Zilch. Zero. Nada. Can you blame Warner Bros. or their no-name filmmakers (not to mention Sossaman and co-star Ed Burns, who both seemed listless while promoting the flick at Comic-Con) for washing their hands of the career-killing box office bomb?

Fun fact: One Missed Call‘s Australian title is Don’t Pick Up the Cell Phone! (Note exclamation point.) Rent accordingly.

 

This week's UK Box Office Top EightIn a piece of news almost as heartwarming as the film itself, Son of Rambow came in at second place in the UK box office this week, with the British indie nabbing almost £1million in the first four days.

Set on a long, hot summer in 1982, the film revolves around two 11-year old scamps Will and Carter, who — after seeing First Blood for the first time, decide to film their own sequel with nothing more than a camcorder and, natch, some imagination.

The film has been in distribution limbo for the past year after its triumphant debut at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, due to issues surrounding the rights to the real Rambo films. But now it’s finally here and it seems a strong advertising push and good reviews (83% on the Tomatometer, compared to Rambo‘s 32%), has seen it rocket up the charts. Empire’s Dan Jolin summed up the critical consensus by saying: “If you only see one Rambo movie this year, make sure it’s this one.”

In fact, the film would surely have come in at number one had it played on more screens. Instead 27 Dresses, (which played on over 150 more theatres than Rambow), is still grimly hanging onto top spot, despite taking in almost 50% less cash than last week.

Meanwhile sweaty Karate Kid-meets-Fight Club-alike Never Back Downalso made a healthy opening debut this week, coming in at fourth place. Reviewers generally scorned this lightweight effort, with the movie’s laughable homoerotic undertones and checklist of clichés arousing particular critical ire. Greg Kirschling of Entertainment Weekly fame even branded the film as, “yet another product that makes you feel bad about today’s youth culture.” Sadly however ‘Grandad Greg’ and his ilk couldn’t stop the cool kids pouring into cinemas though, and the film made a healthy £840,000 over four days.

March Madness hits the North American box office as three new releases hit the multiplexes hoping to take down the reigning Dr. Suess toon. Tyler Perry returns with his latest comedic drama Meet the Browns, Owen Wilson makes a return of his own in the comedy Drillbit Taylor, and Joshua Jackson jets off to Japan for his horror flick Shutter. The Good Friday holiday will help boost weekend numbers since the majority of students and many adults have the day off. But the start of the NCAA college basketball tournament will keep many male moviegoers and sports fans glued to their flat-screens watching the endless string of games all day everyday over the weekend. Fox meanwhile will try to repeat at number one with its animated hit Horton Hears A Who which could become the top-grossing film of 2008 after only ten days.

Shooting for his fourth $20M+ opener, filmmaker Tyler Perry goes hunting for elephants at the box office with his latest work Meet the Browns. The PG-13 pic stars Angela Bassett as a Chicago single mother down on her luck who travels down to Georgia after the death of her father to meet the family she never knew. Starpower will come primarily from Bassett and from Perry himself who in addition to writing and directing brings the wildly popular Madea character back to the big screen after a two-year absence. The role is small but the marketing has made it known that the outlandish law-breaking matriarch is back for some laughs. Former basketball star Rick Fox also has a major role and could be useful in drawing hoops fans.

Perry has been a dependable box office sensation for over three years now drawing in sizable African American moviegoers with stories that skew a bit female. There’s no reason to believe that Browns will fail to reach the heights of his last film Why Did I Get Married? which opened to $21.4M in October. Good Friday and Easter should help boost the numbers too. Hollywood routinely underestimates Perry’s power so expect a sizzling average here. Hitting his top debut, $30M for Madea’s Family Reunion, may not be in the works, but a strong second place showing is a virtual guarantee. Lionsgate will open Meet the Browns in 2,006 theaters and may find itself with around $23M this weekend.

Owen Wilson takes up the title role of Paramount’s new high school comedy Drillbit Taylor playing a homeless soldier of fortune who takes an assignment to protect a trio of teenage nerds. The actor’s biggest commercial hits have come from pairings with other big-name actors like Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller. Here he flies solo as the only star and historically that that has led to small grosses. Younger teens will make up the primary crowd so the PG-13 rating may give pause to parents of kids in the high single digits. A slight male skew is also likely. There’s ample competition so a large debut is not likely, plus Wilson’s main draw comes with adults not twelve-year-olds. The Friday holiday will get things started well, but word-of-mouth will have to take it the rest of the way. Reviews have not been too bright and March Madness will take many boys out of the picture this weekend. Debuting in about 2,700 theaters, Drillbit Taylor could punch up about $12M this weekend.

Another spooky Asian fright film gets the photocopy treatment by the idea-starved American horror industry in Fox’s Shutter. The PG-13 chiller stars Joshua Jackson as a photographer who discovers creepy images of a dead woman in his snapshots. The insatiable horror audience is the target here and the rating will make sure that younger teens up for a scare will be able to buy a ticket. Jackson is far removed from his Dawson’s Creek days and lacks the drawing power he once had. Plus the studio’s marketing push has not been very forceful so awareness is low. Don’t look for this one to open like The Eye or One Missed Call which both bowed in the $12-13M range. The only factors working for it are the 85 minute running time and the fact that there have been no horror films released since the Jessica Alba‘s thriller from the first weekend of February. Snapping into around 2,700 locations, Shutter could gross about $8M this weekend.


Shutter

Fox has no intentions of giving up its hold on the number one spot. The studio’s Seuss hit Horton Hears A Who looks unlikely to be defeated by the newcomers and should take advantage of the Good Friday school holiday to post a better-than-usual sophomore hold. Ice Age dropped by 35% in its second frame in 2002 while its Fox sibling Robots fell by 42% in 2005. Both were March openers but neither had the Easter holiday helping the sophomore session. The well-liked Horton might drop by 30% to about $31M and boost its ten-day total to a robust $91M.

10,000 BC should stabilize after its 53% plunge last weekend. A fall of 45% seems likely giving Warner Bros. $9M for the weekend and $76M after 17 days. A similar decline could await Never Back Down putting it at $4.5M for a ten-day sum of $16M for Summit. Martin Lawrence hasn’t exactly been setting the box office on fire with his latest comedy College Road Trip. The Disney title might drop by 30% to roughly $5.5M and lift its cume to $33M.

LAST YEAR: A six-pack of new releases cleaned house in the top ten led by the animated actioner TMNT which still had turtle power with a $24.3M debut. Warner Bros. went on to bank $54.1M with the toon which had weak legs. The studio followed in second with its Spartan blockbuster 300 which collected $19.9M in its third fight. Modern-day action was at the center of Mark Wahlberg‘s Shooter which opened in third with $14.5M on its way to a solid $47M for Paramount. Disney’s Wild Hogs followed with $13.9M. New Line’s The Last Mimzy bowed in fifth with $10M while the horror sequel The Hills Have Eyes 2 debuted close behind with $9.7M. Final grosses reached $21.5M and $20.8M, respectively. Adam Sandler‘s dramatic turn in Reign Over Me led to a $7.5M launch before a $19.7M finish. Lionsgate suffered the worst opening among the new titles with just $3.5M for the swimming drama Pride which ended with a $7.1M take.

For the first time in three weeks, studios will pack a Friday with plenty of new releases as four films open or expand nationwide giving the box office chart a major shakeup. Leading in the polls and getting the widest release is The Bucket List starring Oscar winners Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. Challenging Hollywood’s old guard are three younger agents of change. Ice Cube campaigns for a spot in the top five with the comedy First Sunday, Jason Statham heads up the adventure tale In the Name of the King, and some cartoon vegetables headline the kidpic The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything. Hoping to play the spoiler is the indie smash Juno which once again expands into wider release. The films should each play to different audiences which will help the overall marketplace expand.

After spending the last decade directing flops, Rob Reiner hopes to score his first number one hit in over fifteen years with The Bucket List which features the Academy Award-winning actors Nicholson and Freeman on screen together for the first time. The PG-13 pic tells the story of two dying old men who set out to fulfill their last wishes before taking the big trip upstairs. Financing a major film anchored by two men who celebrated their 70th birthdays last year is not something Hollywood studios typically do. It’s usually seen as a risky endeavor. But Warner Bros. is counting on mature adults, men and women alike, to take interest and come out to see two legends on the big screen together.

Hurting Bucket‘s chances are the mixed reviews it’s been getting from critics. The target audience for this particular movie will definitely be affected by what reviewers have to say. Also, the picture has come up almost empty-handed during awards seasons so it has less marketing tools in its arsenal than the handful of acclaimed adult dramas touting their awards and nominations. In limited release, Bucket scored muscular per-theater numbers over the last two frames averaging $20,989 and $20,424 from only 16 locations. Co-star drawing power will not shoot this film up to the opening weekend levels of recent Jack flicks like The Departed or Anger Management. But even his less flashy films generate solid debut numbers due to his loyal fan following. Kicking its way into 2,911 theaters, The Bucket List could debut with about $15M.

Two petty criminals plot to rob their neighborhood church in the new comedy First Sunday. The PG-13 film stars Ice Cube, Tracy Morgan, and Katt Williams and will find a large portion of its ticket sales coming from African American moviegoers. Cube has seen much success in the past with early-year comedies like Next Friday which opened to $14.5M in January 2000 and Barbershop 2 which debuted to $24.2M in February 2004. But both of those were sequels that took advantage of built-in audiences that wanted to see popular characters return to the big screen for new shenanigans. The rapper-actor is back with another laugher at the start of a presidential election season, but this time winning the job of commander-in-chief of the box office will probably be out of his reach.

First Sunday comes a week before the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday frame which historically has been a good time for films led by black casts. Cube’s pictures usually are dependable when it comes to drawing a crowd. However his last two releases, the Sony sequels Are We Done Yet? and XXX: State of the Union, were not exactly major hits. Plus the story of stealing from church may not go down well with some folks. Breaking into roughly 2,000 theaters, First Sunday might open with around $12M.


First Sunday

Targeting young males (and older dudes who spent their childhoods playing Dungeons & Dragons), Freestyle Releasing offers up Jason Statham in the adventure tale In the Name of the King. The PG-13 actioner will try to play to the fantasy crowd although most will probably wait for this one on DVD. The distributor tried to make this genre work in the fall with Dragon Wars. which bowed to just $5M and a poor $2,214 average. Fox also failed with its fantasy clunker The Seeker the following month which opened to only $3.7M and an embarrassing $1,192 average. Though aging, heavyweight holdovers National Treasure: Book of Secrets and I Am Legend are set to steal a combined $20M this weekend from the same audience that might be interested in Statham flicks so there will be distractions for younger guys. Of course the NFL playoffs on both Saturday and Sunday will be factors too. Debuting in an estimated 2,500 locations, In the Name of the King may collect about $6M this weekend.


In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale


The year’s first new toon comes in the form of The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything from the VeggieTales franchise. Universal’s G-rated pic about a squash, cucumber, and grape that go on high seas adventures will play to younger tots and their parents. The 2002 film Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie enjoyed a solid bow opening to $6.2M and a $6,597 average during an October weekend when all other films in the top ten were catering to adults. Those kids are all five years older and have probably outgrown the produce-based characters so it will be a new generation taking interest this time. Plus Pirates will face more competition since Alvin and the Chipmunks continues to do killer biz from the family audience and even National Treasure and The Water Horse are pulling dollars from that sector. The studio’s marketing efforts have been aimed at its target audience only so crossover business is not likely. Opening in 1,336 theaters, look for The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything to gross about $5M this weekend.


Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything

Holdovers will finally get some competition to deal with which will certainly shake up the chart rankings. Fox Searchlight’s Juno has been patiently building up buzz and momentum and was rewarded on Monday and Tuesday by seizing control of the number one spot at the North American box office. The distributor will add another 500 theaters to the run climbing to 2,447 playdates which will lead to a solid hold.in its sixth frame. The pregnant teen will duke it out with a pair of grumpy old men for the top spot. It’s girl vs. geezers. Making the contest even more interesting is Juno‘s new televisions spot which features a clip of star Ellen Page mentioning Morgan Freeman by name in one of the film’s more memorable jokes. A scant dip would give Juno about $15M for the weekend and boost the cume up to a remarkable $72M.

After enjoying the second three-week box office reign of his career (the first being his other turn as Ben Gates), Nicolas Cage will see National Treasure: Book of Secrets drop down a couple of spots in the standings. The Buena Vista smash could fall by 40% to about $12M boosting the overall total to $187M which would make it one of the top ten blockbusters of 2007. Also hopping into that list will be fellow PG-rated holiday hit Alvin and the Chipmunks. Fox’s family comedy looks to slide by 35% this weekend to roughly $10M giving the singing chipmunks a robust $189M to date.

Scary movies from last weekend’s top five should witness larger declines. Will Smith‘s I Am Legend which is the highest grossing zombie movie of all-time may fall by 45% to about $8.5M for a $240M cume. The supernatural thriller One Missed Call should depreciate faster and fall 50% to around $6M giving Warner Bros. a respectable $21M after ten days.

LAST YEAR: The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend was ruled by the urban dance drama Stomp the Yard which generated a powerful $25.9M debut over the four-day extended frame. The Sony hit went on to finish with a solid $61.4M. Holdovers filled up the rest of the top five led by three-time champ Night at the Museum with $21.8M over the long weekend. Will Smith’s The Pursuit of Happyness followed with $10.7M with Dreamgirls in fourth with $10.3M and Hilary Swank‘s Freedom Writers ranking fifth with $8.8M over four days. Three new releases opened lower on the charts. Universal’s action drama Alpha Dog bowed to $7.4M on its way to $15.2M. Debuting in more theaters but with smaller grosses were Buena Vista’s horror pic Primeval with $6M and MGM’s kidpic Arthur and the Invisibles with $5.7M. Final grosses reached $10.6M and $15.1M, respectively.

week at the movies, we’ve got cell phone shivers (One Missed Call,
starring Shannyn Sossamon and
Edward Burns) and a sweeping war drama/romance (Atonement,
starring Keira Knightley and
James McAvoy). What do the critics have to say?

The
period romance/war drama
Atonement
has been generating some serious Oscar
buzz, and critics say it’s a worthy awards-season entry. Based upon
Ian McEwan‘s
widely praised novel, Atonement tells the story of Brionly (Saoirse
Ronan), a 13-year-old who (intentionally or not) sabotages a budding romance
between her posh sister Cecilia (Keira Knightley) and the more blue-collar Robbie (James McAvoy); with World War II on the horizon, all three of their lives will
change forever. Critics say director
Joe Wright‘s adaptation does an outstanding
job of translating the source material’s multilayered complexity to the screen
while maintaining a riveting sense of irony and romantic longing throughout;
strong performances from Knightley, McAvoy, and newcomer Ronan don’t
hurt, either. At 85 percent on the Tomatometer, Atonement is not only
Certified Fresh, it’s the statistical equal of the previous Wright-Knightley collabo,
Pride and Prejudice

forgot to add film critics to
their "friends and family" plan, since the movie wasn’t screened before release.
In this remake of a J-horror flick of the same name, people find audio of the
final moments of their lives on voicemail — before they’ve even expired. Kids,
stop calling those 900 numbers and guess that Tomatometer.

The first frame of 2008 brings only one new release which means the North
American box office should be ruled mostly by holiday holdovers. The horror
picture One Missed
Call
will give fans of scary movies something new to nibble on. Awards
contenders will continue to expand including indie sensation
Juno
which will add
hundreds of new theaters to its run. Overall, the healthy marketplace should
post a year-over-year gain versus 2007 to kick off the new year on the right
note.

Hoping to capture some of the success that
The Ring
enjoyed a
half-decade ago, Warner Bros. unleashes the new supernatural thriller
One Missed Call
.
The PG-13 film is a remake of a hit Japanese chiller about young adults who
receive voicemail recordings of their own deaths shortly before they are killed.
Fright films like these typically become winners through two important elements
– a creepy plot and strong marketing. One Missed Call has both. Trailers
and television spots have been very effective in communicating the storyline and
they’ve been edited well enough to give the target audience the chills.


Marketplace conditions are also favorable since there are no other horror
films out there plus no competing new releases this weekend either. Teens and
young adults are the main audience and they are done with the Fresh Prince’s
turn as the last man on Earth and are ready to go see something new. And since
most college students are still on winter break, look for a solid showing from
that segment. Plus a trim running time of under 90 minutes will ensure plenty of
showtimes.


The first non-holiday weekend of January proved to be just the right time to
open two other recent horror hits. In 2006, the R-rated
Hostel
bowed to $19.6M
and a $8,909 average while a year earlier
White Noise
with
its PG-13 classification bowed to $24.1M and a stellar $10,665 average. However,
last January was a tough one for fright flicks as
Primeval
opened
later in the month to only $6M and a $2,475 average and
The Hitcher
debuted
to just $7.8M and a $2,758 average. Opening in 2,240 theaters, One Missed Call
could open to about $9M.


Fox Searchlight will give another major expansion to its hot indie smash
Juno
which will
try to climb one more chart position this weekend. The PG-13 film has been on a
tear since going nationwide on Christmas Day becoming a feel-good hit for the
arthouse crowd and beyond. On Friday, Juno widens from 1,019 to 1,880
locations. Look for its average of $10,436 to simmer down to about $7,000 in
this frame resulting in a solid $13M weekend gross which again would be the
biggest of its run so far. The total would rise to $49M with the road ahead
leading past the $100M mark.


With only one new film going into release,
Nicolas Cage
hopes to make it three straight weekends atop the box office charts with

National Treasure: Book of Secrets
. The Disney smash could drop by
40% to about $22M lifting the cume to an amazing $171M which would be within
striking distance of the $173M of its 2004 predecessor.


Like Treasure,
Alvin
and the Chipmunks
also faces virtually no competition from One
Missed Call
. The Fox comedy might fall by 35% to roughly $19M which would
push the total to $176M.


Sci-fi megahit I
Am Legend
has become the third biggest grosser of
Will Smith‘s
career and its cume is still climbing higher. Warner Bros. could see a 40% drop
to around $16M for a gross to date of $227M. The quarter-billion mark
domestically is still within its reach. Overseas, Legend has vaulted to $126M
already so the $400M worldwide barrier could crumble this weekend.


Tom Hanks
and Julia
Roberts
enjoyed a healthy post-Christmas bump for
Charlie Wilson’s
War
which mature audiences are now finding. Universal’s 1980s-set
flick may drop by 30% to $8M for an overall sum of $52M.


LAST YEAR: For the third consecutive weekend,
Ben Stiller
and Will Smith dominated the multiplexes with their latest films.
Night at the
Museum
topped the charts once again and grossed $23.7M in its third
frame while
The Pursuit of Happyness
ranked second with $12.9M in its fourth outing.
The blockbuster duo had grossed a combined $288M to date and eventually reached
$414M together. Universal’s futuristic drama
Children of Men

expanded nationally and opened in third with a strong $10.2M and $8,435 average.
Paramount’s
Hilary Swank
drama
Freedom Writers

debuted in fourth with a solid $9.4M and $6,916 average. Respective final
grosses of $35.3M and $36.6M resulted.
Dreamgirls rounded out
the top five with $8.7M and a potent $10,168 average. Opening poorly in sixth
was Lionsgate’s kidpic
Happily N’Ever
After
with $6.6M on its way to only $15.6M.

It’s been somewhat lost in all the excitement surrounding January releases such as One Missed Call and Mad Money, but there’s a little monster flick called Cloverfield coming out this month — and one of the movie’s stars, Michael Stahl-David, is here with a new interview to help us remember where to spend our ticket money on the 18th!

Stahl-David sat down with ShockTillYouDrop‘s Ryan Rotten to talk about his experiences behind the scenes of the J.J. Abrams-produced Cloverfield, admitting he “thought it was something I was going to be completely embarrassed of” before discussing the way director Matt Reeves used handheld cameras and improv to bring his vision to life:

“It felt like we were on a search for truth together…[Reeves] wasn’t going to make me do something I didn’t feel was real. If there was something on the script I didn’t feel quite like it would happen in that moment, we wouldn’t do it. I would say something else, do something else. It wasn’t about trying to be clever and come up with your own stuff. It’s not a very talky movie, it was more about questioning what would you do in this situation? What would I do?

“I think in some ways it’s as much a survival movie as it is about the monster. The monster is definitely the problem, but you’re seeing it the way we would, we don’t pan back and watch it perfectly. It is going to be exciting. It is contemporary film vocabulary — this kind of first-hand account, something that could’ve been on YouTube or something. Someone just holds up the camera and starts filming, there are probably other accounts, [our footage is] just the one the government happens to find.”

The footage the government happens to find, eh? Sounds like things don’t end so well for Stahl-David and his band of merry monster fighters — but then again, wherever Abrams goes, unexpected twists are sure to follow. This week,
One Missed Call
brings to US screens the
story of a girl terrorized by her wickedly foreboding cell phone. In honor of
this J-Horror remake, Total Recall takes a look at at film about freaky phones.

It’s fascinating how many horror films hinge on a phone
call — and not singly calls from hit men, ghosts or psycho killers either. The
whole "knock-knock-boo!" horror convention has left the ranks of gimmick and
moved full-blown into sub-genre. Like I wrote, there are plenty of these films
out there (we’ll only discuss three influential ones here), boasting tendencies
to boot. You’ll usually find a girl at the receiving end of the call. Tackily
suggesting a need to get the last word, the girl in question will sometimes
return the call (I mean if you’re stupid enough…that’s what you get), and the
killer is generally close at hand. Predictable, right?

The fun of these films often comes from clever direction.
These older phone films were commonly chamber plays, featuring characters tied
to rooms and phones with cords. So, the more film literate audiences go to see
how a director could suck suspense from four walls. Obviously cordless phones
and even mobile phones alter the dynamics of suspense: I once heard a mystery
writer bemoan cell phones saying he could never pull suspense from an "out of
office alert" again.


Within the "scary phone" sub-genre, the origin spot, the
fontanel of the genre would have to be 1948’s
Sorry, Wrong Number
(90 percent on
the Tomatometer). Time has been kind to
Anatole Litvak‘s noir about a pushy
princess with a weak constitution. Star
Barbara Stanwyk spends literally the
entire film chain-smoking in bed, compulsively making calls on a rotary phone.
Her husband (Burt Lancaster), is the weak sort of WWII vet that populates these
noirs with their bossy women and easy scores. When Stanwyk hears, by way of
crossed phone wires, a murder plot and is completely disregarded by the police,
she takes things into her own hands. Up until, of course, she finds out she’s
the mark for the murder and then her self-righteous vigilance devolves into
hysteria. Stanwyk is brilliant as always and Lancaster is sort of incredible
himself, playing a resigned and beat down husband who married up and hates every
moment. Oh, all the tricks up all those fabulously tailored sleeves.

Critics like it now ("The film’s
basic premise is just too compelling to resist," wrote Doug Pratt of DVDLaser),
but it was less kindly received when it came out. Bosley Crowther of the New
York Times
, for example, said "the narrative structure of the story and the involuted way in which it is told, with flashbacks occurring within flashbacks
and extraneities popping here and there, cause it to be quite bewildering and
therefore tedious in the lengthy middle phase." We don’t often recall that noir
was not universally liked before the French gave it its affectionate moniker.
Also, this chamber play accomplishes plenty outside of the room, employing
flashbacks and Pac Bell almost simultaneously.


The award for "glossiest" phone horror has to go to
Hitchcock‘s
Dial M for Murder
(1954, 78 percent). Picking up a bit where Sorry,
Wrong Number
left off, the murder in Dial M can again be traced to
marital discord and upward mobility. Boy, those wimpy men love their
comeuppance.

Grace Kelly plays glamorous and resourceful wife Margot to
Ray Milland‘s conniving and money hungry husband Tony. Tony discovers Margot’s
infidelity and hires a college classmate to do her in. The cue for murderous
action is a phone call. Because of what happens after the phone call, the film
takes a direction that’s darker than is generally expected from a Technicolor
spectacle slash 3-D eye popper." Dial M For Murder includes
one of the most intricate plots of any murder mystery as well as maximum amounts
of Hitchcock’s trademark suspense," wrote David Bezanson of Filmcritic.com.

Popcorn is commonplace in film culture and it’s an
accessory well at home in
Wes Craven‘s uber-referential horror masterwork,
Scream

(84 percent) Okay, so maybe "masterwork" is a big word here, but I remember when
this film came out and the buzz reached past critical ballyhoo and ventured well
into the territory of genre-defining cultural reference. Like Billy Wilder’s
association with the rise and fall of noir, Craven had an association with the
slasher film and in the height of self-reference, Scream provided a
perfect balance of teen sex appeal and genre study. 

The teenagers in Scream have seen all the horror
films they need to get the rules. And sophisticated as they are, those thrill
seekers don’t take anything seriously, playfully chatting with the killer,
masked as the existentially agonized screamer from Edward Munch’s "The Scream," waits quietly behind the plate glass door. The opening scene famously featured
the return of long absent
Drew Barrymore, some Jiffy Pop, and a chat about
horror films with the prank caller/cineaste/killer and was widely praised. Mike
Bracken of Toxicuniverse.com wrote, "The film opens with one of the best, most
intense, most unexpected opening sequences I’ve ever seen then rips on for
another ninety minutes or so, rarely flagging in terms of pace." See…girls don’t
always need the last word.
