All Samuel L. Jackson Movies Ranked

After a number of character parts and bit roles in a swath of urban dramas at the start of his career, Jackson made his breakthrough statement as the fiery voice of reason in Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing: DJ Mister Señor Love Daddy. Pulling off a character with a name like that should only lead to more success, and sure enough, then came the slapstick comedy (Loaded Weapon 1), a disarming role in Jurassic Park, and the ultimate ’90s character: hitman Jules Winnfield in Pulp Fiction.

From there, Jackson has only cemented his rep as Hollywood’s versatile king of volatile cool, partnering with John McClane (Die Hard With a Vengeance), feelin’ the Force in the Star Wars prequels, starring as the sexy spawn of Shaft, and making his mark in original meme movie Snakes on a Plane.

The producers of the XXX franchise made every effort to remove Vin Diesel from the series. Not only did they turn the franchise over to Ice Cube for the sequel, they filmed a short for the XXX DVD where Diesel’s character, Xander Cage, gets his trademark scalp blown off.

Now, director Rob Cohen and Diesel have sat down with Revolution Studios’ Joe Roth to discuss bringing Cage back for XXX3. “Joe Roth came to the dubbing stage [of The Mummy] just last week, sat down and said, ‘I own all the rights to XXX. Vin wants to do another one. Would you be interested?'” said Cohen. “I said, ‘Yeah, if I can sit down with everybody and make sure that the rules are set.”

It would be easy enough to explain that Cage just faked his death. “You mean when I blew his scalp off? Never has a director gotten so much revenge on an actor. I was so mad. I was so angry by the time we got back from the press tour that when Sony came to me and said, ‘We’re going to have a new one, we want you to shoot a scene that passes the torch.’ I said, ‘Hell with passing the torch. Let’s kill him.’ Now I’m a little embarrassed by that, but I just laughed, because it was just out of anger.”

Everyone’s all grown up now, so XXX3 should be tension-free. “Yes, he has had a baby girl. He’s in a good relationship. I had dinner with him before he did Fast and Furious. He’s a different man. He’s been sobered by the ups and downs of a career, and I think he now understands what a good synergy we had on this set and that he took for granted. That would be a good thing, and I also appreciate what he brings to the table, which is quite a bit. It was just like we were young and foolish, or he was young and I was foolish.”

For the first time in three weeks, studios will pack a Friday with plenty of new releases as four films open or expand nationwide giving the box office chart a major shakeup. Leading in the polls and getting the widest release is The Bucket List starring Oscar winners Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. Challenging Hollywood’s old guard are three younger agents of change. Ice Cube campaigns for a spot in the top five with the comedy First Sunday, Jason Statham heads up the adventure tale In the Name of the King, and some cartoon vegetables headline the kidpic The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything. Hoping to play the spoiler is the indie smash Juno which once again expands into wider release. The films should each play to different audiences which will help the overall marketplace expand.

After spending the last decade directing flops, Rob Reiner hopes to score his first number one hit in over fifteen years with The Bucket List which features the Academy Award-winning actors Nicholson and Freeman on screen together for the first time. The PG-13 pic tells the story of two dying old men who set out to fulfill their last wishes before taking the big trip upstairs. Financing a major film anchored by two men who celebrated their 70th birthdays last year is not something Hollywood studios typically do. It’s usually seen as a risky endeavor. But Warner Bros. is counting on mature adults, men and women alike, to take interest and come out to see two legends on the big screen together.

Hurting Bucket‘s chances are the mixed reviews it’s been getting from critics. The target audience for this particular movie will definitely be affected by what reviewers have to say. Also, the picture has come up almost empty-handed during awards seasons so it has less marketing tools in its arsenal than the handful of acclaimed adult dramas touting their awards and nominations. In limited release, Bucket scored muscular per-theater numbers over the last two frames averaging $20,989 and $20,424 from only 16 locations. Co-star drawing power will not shoot this film up to the opening weekend levels of recent Jack flicks like The Departed or Anger Management. But even his less flashy films generate solid debut numbers due to his loyal fan following. Kicking its way into 2,911 theaters, The Bucket List could debut with about $15M.

Two petty criminals plot to rob their neighborhood church in the new comedy First Sunday. The PG-13 film stars Ice Cube, Tracy Morgan, and Katt Williams and will find a large portion of its ticket sales coming from African American moviegoers. Cube has seen much success in the past with early-year comedies like Next Friday which opened to $14.5M in January 2000 and Barbershop 2 which debuted to $24.2M in February 2004. But both of those were sequels that took advantage of built-in audiences that wanted to see popular characters return to the big screen for new shenanigans. The rapper-actor is back with another laugher at the start of a presidential election season, but this time winning the job of commander-in-chief of the box office will probably be out of his reach.

First Sunday comes a week before the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday frame which historically has been a good time for films led by black casts. Cube’s pictures usually are dependable when it comes to drawing a crowd. However his last two releases, the Sony sequels Are We Done Yet? and XXX: State of the Union, were not exactly major hits. Plus the story of stealing from church may not go down well with some folks. Breaking into roughly 2,000 theaters, First Sunday might open with around $12M.


First Sunday

Targeting young males (and older dudes who spent their childhoods playing Dungeons & Dragons), Freestyle Releasing offers up Jason Statham in the adventure tale In the Name of the King. The PG-13 actioner will try to play to the fantasy crowd although most will probably wait for this one on DVD. The distributor tried to make this genre work in the fall with Dragon Wars. which bowed to just $5M and a poor $2,214 average. Fox also failed with its fantasy clunker The Seeker the following month which opened to only $3.7M and an embarrassing $1,192 average. Though aging, heavyweight holdovers National Treasure: Book of Secrets and I Am Legend are set to steal a combined $20M this weekend from the same audience that might be interested in Statham flicks so there will be distractions for younger guys. Of course the NFL playoffs on both Saturday and Sunday will be factors too. Debuting in an estimated 2,500 locations, In the Name of the King may collect about $6M this weekend.


In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale


The year’s first new toon comes in the form of The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything from the VeggieTales franchise. Universal’s G-rated pic about a squash, cucumber, and grape that go on high seas adventures will play to younger tots and their parents. The 2002 film Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie enjoyed a solid bow opening to $6.2M and a $6,597 average during an October weekend when all other films in the top ten were catering to adults. Those kids are all five years older and have probably outgrown the produce-based characters so it will be a new generation taking interest this time. Plus Pirates will face more competition since Alvin and the Chipmunks continues to do killer biz from the family audience and even National Treasure and The Water Horse are pulling dollars from that sector. The studio’s marketing efforts have been aimed at its target audience only so crossover business is not likely. Opening in 1,336 theaters, look for The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything to gross about $5M this weekend.


Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything

Holdovers will finally get some competition to deal with which will certainly shake up the chart rankings. Fox Searchlight’s Juno has been patiently building up buzz and momentum and was rewarded on Monday and Tuesday by seizing control of the number one spot at the North American box office. The distributor will add another 500 theaters to the run climbing to 2,447 playdates which will lead to a solid hold.in its sixth frame. The pregnant teen will duke it out with a pair of grumpy old men for the top spot. It’s girl vs. geezers. Making the contest even more interesting is Juno‘s new televisions spot which features a clip of star Ellen Page mentioning Morgan Freeman by name in one of the film’s more memorable jokes. A scant dip would give Juno about $15M for the weekend and boost the cume up to a remarkable $72M.

After enjoying the second three-week box office reign of his career (the first being his other turn as Ben Gates), Nicolas Cage will see National Treasure: Book of Secrets drop down a couple of spots in the standings. The Buena Vista smash could fall by 40% to about $12M boosting the overall total to $187M which would make it one of the top ten blockbusters of 2007. Also hopping into that list will be fellow PG-rated holiday hit Alvin and the Chipmunks. Fox’s family comedy looks to slide by 35% this weekend to roughly $10M giving the singing chipmunks a robust $189M to date.

Scary movies from last weekend’s top five should witness larger declines. Will Smith‘s I Am Legend which is the highest grossing zombie movie of all-time may fall by 45% to about $8.5M for a $240M cume. The supernatural thriller One Missed Call should depreciate faster and fall 50% to around $6M giving Warner Bros. a respectable $21M after ten days.

LAST YEAR: The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend was ruled by the urban dance drama Stomp the Yard which generated a powerful $25.9M debut over the four-day extended frame. The Sony hit went on to finish with a solid $61.4M. Holdovers filled up the rest of the top five led by three-time champ Night at the Museum with $21.8M over the long weekend. Will Smith’s The Pursuit of Happyness followed with $10.7M with Dreamgirls in fourth with $10.3M and Hilary Swank‘s Freedom Writers ranking fifth with $8.8M over four days. Three new releases opened lower on the charts. Universal’s action drama Alpha Dog bowed to $7.4M on its way to $15.2M. Debuting in more theaters but with smaller grosses were Buena Vista’s horror pic Primeval with $6M and MGM’s kidpic Arthur and the Invisibles with $5.7M. Final grosses reached $10.6M and $15.1M, respectively.

Easter weekend sees four new wide releases hopping into the marketplace aiming to give the spring box office a boost.

Action audiences get The Weinstein Company’s two-for-the-price-of-one special "Grindhouse" while horror fans go for a scare with the religious-themed fright flick "The Reaping" starring Hilary Swank which opens on Thursday. Wednesday saw two competing family films bow – the Ice Cube sequel "Are We Done Yet?" and the pooch pic "Firehouse Dog." With Good Friday being a holiday for many, three-day numbers should reach healthy levels.

Moviegoers with three hours to kill and a love of death and destruction will line up for "Grindhouse," a double feature with separate films directed by indie heroes Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez. The R-rated pic includes the former’s road actioner "Death Proof" starring Kurt Russell, Rosario Dawson and Rose McGowan while the latter’s zombie flick "Planet Terror" stars McGowan and Freddy Rodriguez. Clearly the primary business will come from the young male fan base that Tarantino and Rodriguez hold dearly. Since there is so much overlap here, the grosses may not grow beyond what they’ve seen with previous hits.

"Grindhouse" has had some flashy marketing which is successfully generating interest. Plus there is starpower behind the cameras. Add in the two-for-one novelty item and the press tour that the cast and directors are on and it’s clear to see that a strong opening weekend will result. Debuts for similar ultraviolent R-rated films from the helmers include $22.1M for 2003’s "Kill Bill Vol. 1," $25.1M for the folowing year’s "Kill Bill Vol. 2," and $29.1M for 2005’s "Sin City." But cutting into "Grindhouse"’s potential will be its length which will force each screen to offer one less showtime per day compared to conventional two-hour films. Reviews have been very positive so the pic may reach a little beyond its core crowd of fan boys. Entering 2,624 theaters on Friday, "Grindhouse" could deliver an opening weekend gross of around $25M.


"Grindhouse"

Following in the footsteps of Jim Carrey and Sandra Bullock from earlier this year, Hilary Swank gives it a go in the world of horror with the new religious-themed chiller "The Reaping." The R-rated film finds the two-time Oscar winner playing a scientist called in to investigate mysterious occurances in a small Louisiana town where locals believe Biblical devastation is on its way. Horror flicks with religious storylines usually connect with audiences and with "The Reaping" timed for an Easter weekend launch, a sizable four-day start is likely. The thriller should skew a bit more female given the protagonist while age-wise, the appeal seems broader than just older teens and young adults.

With the Thursday debut, Warner Bros. is looking to take advantage of the Good Friday holiday which will make Thursday night at the multiplexes seem like a Friday night. A Wednesday bow, which is common for this particular weekend, would have been more risky as bad word-of-mouth from opening day ticket buyers who return to work or school on Thursday would dampen weekend sales. Reviews have not been too pleasant, but the studio deserves credit for actually holding press screenings which nowadays is rare for a horror film. With "Premonition" and "The Hills Have Eyes 2" both fading away into the low single-digit millions this weekend, "The Reaping" is ready to cater to those in the market for a good scare. Warner Bros. attacks 2,501 theaters on Thursday and increases the run to 2,603 on Friday and could register an opening weekend of roughly $14M and $17M over four days.

Rapper-turned-actor Ice Cube conquered the kiddie movie box office two years ago with the surprise hit "Are We There Yet?" which grossed $82.3M becoming the star’s biggest career hit. For the sequel "Are We Done Yet?," Sony has replaced the road comedy element with a story about a family facing all kinds of obstacles fixing up their new house. There debuted to a solid $18.6M in January 2005 against almost no competition for family audiences. "Done" feels like the same dish served up again and has not really excited its target audience. Plus there is much more competition for it to deal with in the marketplace, notably Disney’s "Meet the Robinsons" which offers fresh new entertainment. Cube probably won’t see the same success the second time around but at least the grosses won’t tumble 82% the way they did when he took control of the "XXX" sequel. Now playing in 2,877 theaters, "Are We Done Yet?" could collect about $13M over three days and $16M over five days.

Families not in the mood for some fun with Ice Cube get to try out the boy-and-his-dog drama "Firehouse Dog" from Fox. The PG-rated pic about a celebrity hound that gets lost and later rescued by a firefighting team lacks the starpower and marketing muscle needed to deliver a strong opening. Between "Are We Done Yet?," "Meet the Robinsons," and even "TMNT," kids have enough choices this Easter weekend and will probably wait for "Firehouse Dog" on DVD. Bowing in 2,566 sites, the family film could open with about $7M over three days and $9M over five days.

Among holdovers, the Will Ferrell comedy "Blades of Glory" looks to lose its spot at the top of the box office, but should still deliver a solid sophomore spin. The comedian’s summer hits "Talladega Nights" and "Anchorman" both dropped by more than 50% in their second weekends. "Blades" has the Good Friday holiday to help soften the blow a bit. A 45% decline would give Paramount about $18M for the frame and a solid $61M after ten days.

Disney’s "Meet the Robinsons" also got off to a strong start last weekend, but will face stiff competition for families from both "Are We Done Yet?" and "Firehouse Dog." The 3D toon could slide 35% to around $16M for a ten-day cume of nearly $50M. The ultraviolent war film "300" may fall by 45% to $6M and lift its impressive haul to $190M. The worldwide tally should blast past $350M this weekend.

LAST YEAR: Still ranking number one with ease was the animated smash "Ice Age: The Meltdown" with $33.8M despite losing half of its opening weekend sales. Debuting in second was the Rob Schneider sports comedy "The Benchwarmers" with $19.7M on its way to $57.7M for Sony. New Line’s dance pic "Take the Lead" opened in third with $12.1M before finishing off with $34.7M. The Denzel WashingtonJodie Foster actioner "Inside Man" followed with $9.1M in its third heist. Rounding out the top five was another action thriller "Lucky Number Slevin" with a $7M bow on its way to $22.5M for The Weinstein Co. The Fox Searchlight comedy "Phat Girlz" flopped in ninth with just $3.1M before getting yanked with only $7.1M.

This week at the movies, we’ve got snakes…. on a plane ("Snakes on a Plane," starring Samuel L. Jackson), slackers on a campus ("Accepted," starring Justin Long), and Duffs on the screen ("Material Girls," starring Hilary and Haylie Duff). What do the critics have to say?

"Snakes on a Plane," the movie with the greatest title since "Dude, Where’s My Car?", has captured the imagination of the blogosphere. However, it will have to wait to capture the imagination of the critics, since it wasn’t screened in advance. The plot involves an FBI agent (Samuel L. Jackson) who, golly, would really like to expel those ophidians from the aircraft upon which he’s traveling. Since "SOAP" (as the fanboys and girls call it) has no reviews, we’re going to play our favorite game: Guess the @#&$*$ Tomatometer.


Contrary to the wishes of Samuel L. Jackson, these guys are putting the snakes on the @#&$*$ plane.

There’s something inherently appealing about a bunch of party-hearty students and their battles with the uptight squares; that’s why movie people keep trying to recapture the magic of "Animal House" and "Rock ‘n’ Roll High School." "Accepted" tells the story of a high school graduate (Justin Long) who’s having no luck getting into college, so he decides to start his own fake institute of higher learning. To his surprise, a bunch of like-minded outcasts join him. Critics say the movie has its share of laughs, but it never totally gels, and turns a little too sweet at the end. At 31 percent on the Tomatometer, "Accepted" has been waitlisted.

Critics can beg, and critics can plead, but they can’t see "Material Girls" (that’s right!), ’cause the audience members with the cold hard cash are always Mr. (and Ms.) Right. Or, perhaps the people behind the latest Duff sisters vehicle feel the film is in the same artistic league as Madge‘s "Body of Evidence." Guess this Tomatometer while you’re at it.

"Little Miss Sunshine" was a big hit at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and now that it’s hitting the theaters, the scribes are just as enthusiastic as the folks in Park City. This tale of a dysfunctional family hitting the road for a child pageant is Certified Fresh, and features sharp performances from its ensemble cast, particularly Greg Kinnear and Steve Carell. At 94 percent, this one’s a ray of "Sunshine." (Check out RT’s interview with co-directors Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton here.)

Also in theaters in limited release this week: "Factotum," the Sundance-approved Bukowski adaptation starring Matt Dillon and Lili Taylor, is at 75 percent; "The Illusionist," a tale of intrigue in turn of the century Vienna starring Ed Norton, Jessica Biel, and Paul Giamatti, is at 67 percent; Dutch import "Moonlight," a tale of risky teenage love, is at 60 percent; "Trust the Man," a rom-com starring David Duchovny and Julianne Moore, is at 39 percent; and "10th & Wolf," a story of mob family ties starring James Marsden and Giovanni Ribisi, is at zero percent.

Finally, props to XeternityX, who came closest to predicting "Pulse"’s 12 percent Tomatometer. Nobody got particularly close to "Zoom," still flying high at zero percent. Be forwarned when guessing the Tomatometers for this week’s unscreened releases: the average T-meter for movies not screened for critics is 11.75 percent.

Busy screenwriter Simon Kinberg ("Mr. & Mrs. Smith," "xXx: State of the Union") has been hard at work penning the upcoming "Wolverine" spin-off movie, and he recently dropped a few hints and tidbits that the fans may appreciate.

From iFMagazine: "What was working with the Wolverine character like knowing they are planning a "Wolverine" movie?

Kinberg: "Wolverine" doesn’t exactly come after X3 so what happens to him is not terribly relevant to his own movie. We did talk about a couple of characters that they wanted to save for the "Wolverine" movie spin-off. I can’t tell you who they are, but there was really only one we wanted to use for "X-Men: The Last Stand," and they said they’re not going to have a big enough part to risk losing them for "Wolverine." Sabretooth will be in there, but I don’t know in what form. I think his relationship with Wolverine is under explored. I like X1 a great deal, I thought the tone was fantastic and thought the X-Men were great, but I was a little under whelmed by the Brotherhood in that movie. I thought the secret island lair and Magneto’s plot were confusing to me, and Sabretooth and Toad were not as strong as Mystique."

The internet’s been a’buzzin’ with talk of this crazy little "Snakes on a Plane" flick, and ComingSoon.net chimes in with a brief chat with sexy "Snakes" star Sunny Mabrey.

"I play a flight attendant with Julianna Margulies and a couple other actors as well," she says. "Pretty much the whole movie is on that plane so it’s pretty terrifying and funny and sad… it’s a little bit of everything." Mabrey added that working with Margulies was "great, so much fun. We’re both big game people so we’d always go to somebody’s house or apartment or trailer and play games."

Mabrey also revealed a bit more about the snakes used in the film. "We used a ton of real snakes, everything you can imagine from garden snakes to 20-foot Burmese pythons. We also used CGI of course and rubber snakes, very realistic-looking rubber snakes."

Red-blooded males will undoubtedly remember Ms. Mabrey from her work in "Species 3" and "xXx: State of the Union." Her "One Last Thing" (which I enjoyed a whole lot) will hit DVD later this month.

ComingSoon.net shares a press release from Revolution Studios, and this one centers on a sci-fi action flick entitled "Next," which will star Nicolas Cage, Julianne Moore, and the lovely, lovely Jessica Biel.

Lee Tamahori ("xXx: State of the Union") is directing. (The potentially good news is that the project is based on a Philip K. Dick story — so at least they’re starting from a solid foundation.)

Revolution press release: "Filming has begun in Los Angeles on Revolution Studios’ ‘Next,’ a science fiction action thriller starring Academy Award® winner Nicolas Cage, Academy Award® nominee Julianne Moore and Jessica Biel, it was announced today. The film, which is being directed by Lee Tamahori, will be released domestically by Columbia Pictures in 2007. IEG Virtual Studios, an affiliate of Initial Entertainment Group, holds the international distribution rights.

Next is being produced for Revolution Studios by Cage and his Saturn Films producing partner Norm Golightly, Broken Road Productions’ Todd Garner, Initial Entertainment Group’s Graham King and Arne Schmidt. The screenplay is by Gary Goldman and is based on the Philip K. Dick story "The Golden Man." Goldman, Jason Koernick and Ben Waisbren are serving as executive producers. Dick’s stories have been the basis for such films as ‘Blade Runner,’ ‘Total Recall,’ ‘Minority Report‘ and the upcoming ‘A Scanner Darkly.’

In ‘Next,’ Nicolas Cage plays a man with the unique ability to see future events and affect their outcome. Relentlessly pursued by the FBI, which is seeking to use his abilities to prevent a global terrorist threat, he is ultimately faced with the daunting choice of saving the world or the woman he loves."

Statuesque star Nicole Kidman and successful screenwriter Simon Kinberg ("Mr. & Mrs. Smith," "X-Men: The Last Stand") aim to work together over Fox, and the project is presently being described as a female version of "The Bourne Identity." Kidman?

According to The Hollywood Reporter: "Nicole Kidman and writer Simon Kinberg are teaming on a spy thriller that was pre-emptively picked up by Regency Enterprises and 20th Century Fox. Kinberg will write the untitled project, while Kidman will star and produce via Fox-based Blueprint Films.

Story line details are being kept under wraps, but the film is described as being in the vein of "The Bourne Identity" but with a female protagonist. The project provides an opportunity for Kidman and Kinberg to finally work together. Kidman originally was attached to co-star alongside Brad Pitt in the Regency hit "Mr. & Mrs. Smith," which Kinberg wrote. She dropped out because of scheduling conflicts, paving the way for Angelina Jolie to topline."

Anyone out there buy Nicole Kidman as an action heroine? Me neither, really, but she’s so darn cute, I’d be more than willing to suspend some of that disbelief for a few hours.

As far as Mr. Kinberg is concerned, this is an impressive turnaround: Prior to doing a darn fine job on "Smith," he was known mainly as "the new kid who wrote "xXx: State of the Union" … who also did uncredited script-work on "Catwoman" and "Fantastic Four."

According to celeb-watching site TMZ.com, New Zealand-born director Lee Tamahori was arrested January 8 in Hollywood for solicitation of an undercover cop; furthermore, the "XXX: State of the Union" helmer allegedly offered his services while dressed in drag.

It sounds almost too crazy to be true, even in a city where last week Joaquin Phoenix flipped his car only to have notorious German director Werner Herzog come to his aid.

As reported in TMZ.com’s article, Tamahori "was allegedly dressed in drag, approached an undercover officer who was in his car, entered the vehicle and offered to perform a sex act for money." An apparently official Los Angeles County court document dated February 1 cites two misdemeanor charges for solicitation for prostitution and loitering with the intent to commit prostitution.

It remains to be seen if any additional media outlets will pick up and verify the bizarre and outlandish (even by Hollywood standards) story.

Tamahori has been relatively quiet since last spring’s "XXX" sequel; his next project, a futuristic sci-fi actioner titled, well, "Next," is set to star Nicolas Cage and Julianne Moore in an adaptation of a Philip K. Dick story about a man with visions of the future who must evade authorities and win the love of his future baby’s momma.

In addition to these action flicks, Tamahori previously directed the Bond pic "Die Another Day," "Along Came A Spider," "The Edge," and "Mulholland Falls" but hasn’t had a fresh Tomatometer since his feature-film debut, "Once Were Warriors."

John Horn of the LA Times delivers an interesting article on the sad state of affairs over at Sony Pictures. Seems that, aside from "Hitch," none of Sony’s releases have found an overly receptive audience this year. (For those keeping score, Sony’s 2005 releases include "Stealth," "xXx: State of the Union," "Lords of Dogtown," "Bewitched," and that "Deuce Bigalow" sequel.) Also, it seems that "Fun With Dick & Jane" is a merciless money-pit, and that alleged "Sinbad" movie starring Keanu Reeves and "Stealth" director Rob Cohen? Yeah, that project’s dead now.

"Light romantic comedies are not supposed to be expensive, grueling endeavors, but the filming of "Fun With Dick and Jane" was anything but fun for Sony Pictures.

Months over schedule and millions over budget, the remake of the 1977 caper comedy had a revolving door of top-dollar screenwriters constantly reworking its script. A year after the Jim Carrey movie began filming, director Dean Parisot had to go back behind the cameras, reshooting some 30 pages of new dialogue. The movie missed its planned summer release and will now come out in December."

Also, "the studio pulled the plug on "The 8th Voyage of Sinbad," a planned expensive spectacle that was to pair "Matrix" star Keanu Reeves with director Cohen. While Cohen’s "The Fast and the Furious" and the first "XXX" movie were global smashes, his $135-million "Stealth" was a summer flop, grossing just $32.1 million in domestic theaters and generating a Sony loss of almost $50 million."

Screenwriter/producer Simon Kinberg and his pal Brett Matthews will soon be collaborating on a big science fiction epic for Universal, says Variety, and Mr. Kinberg compares the project to a sci-fi Jason Bourne exploit.

"Details on the thriller are being kept under wraps for now, but pic will be written by Matthews.

Kinberg says he came up with the story idea and began working on it with Matthews. "I developed it for a while, but Brett really made it his own and took it over," he said.

He wouldn’t elaborate on the story except to say, "It’s more thriller than big, broad action; more gritty than other sci-fi movies we’ve seen in the recent past. Almost what ‘Bourne Identity‘ did for action movies, this will attempt to do for sci-fi movies."

"We wanted the science-fiction aspect of our story to be eerily plausible," Matthews said. "For the concept to be fantastic, but only until you really think about it.""

So who are Kinberg and Matthews?

Simon Kinberg has screenwriting credits on "xXx: State of the Union" and "Mr. & Mrs. Smith," plus he’s presently hard at work on "X-Men 3." Brett Matthews has a little less experience ("The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury" and a "Bionicle" movie), but since he also wrote the ‘Heart of Gold’ episode of "Firefly," he clearly has some skills on the sci-fi-action front.

This week at the movies features two of our favorite story elements: demonic possession ("The Exorcism of Emily Rose") and fish-out-of-water-cop-buddy-action stuff ("The Man"). Will the critics see the light, or is it off to the slammer for these two?

Nothing adds spice to a story quite like demonic possession; people are still talking about the time on "Days of Our Lives" when Marlenea was infected by Satan for close to a whole season. So how about a courtroom drama in which the bad guy is the Prince of Darkness himself? Well that’s what they tried to do with "The Exorcism of Emily Rose," and the scribes are split as to whether it works. While some have praised the film (which stars Laura Linney and Tom Wilkinson) for its sincere questions about the nature of belief, others say it is unable to sustain a coherent tone and suffers in comparison to the granddaddy of all demonic possession flicks, "The Exorcist." At 48 percent on the Tomatometer, this "Rose" isn’t smelling so sweet.

Ever get the idea that some movies are greenlit simply because someone thought, "Dude, that sounds like it might be mildly amusing!" That seems to describe "The Man," a buddy action comedy, starring Samuel L. Jackson and Eugene Levy, that critics say does absolutely nothing to transcend its premise. The plot involves a dental supply salesman (Levy) who wanders into a drug investigation headed by Jackson; as one would expect, Jackson plays a man who does not suffer fools gladly, and Levy plays a loveable fool. At 23 percent on the Tomatometer, the critics say this "Man" is a dog: predictable, uninspired, and utterly average.
