The 26th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were handed out Sunday night, and the big winner on the night was Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite, which shocked the room – and most people watching at home – by winning the night’s top prize, Outstanding Performance By A Cast In A Motion Picture. It is the first time ever that a foreign-language film has won the SAG Awards’ top honor and sets the film up as a rival frontrunner to 1917 heading into the Oscars. On the TV front, the big winners were The Crown and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which won the ensemble categories for Drama and Comedy respectively.

Joaquin Phoenix shored up his frontrunner status leading into the Academy Awards, winning Outstanding Performance By A Male Actor In A Leading Role for Joker (he paid tribute to his fellow nominees, revealing he’s lost many a gig to Leonardo DiCaprio and jokingly telling Christian Bale he wish he would “just suck once”). Similarly, Oscar favorite Renée Zellweger took home the award for Female Actor In A Leading Role for Judy, and received a standing ovation as she walked to the stage.

Among the other winners, a number of categories went very much as expected: Laura Dern and Brad Pitt won in the supporting categories on the film side; Phoebe Waller-Bridge won for acting in a comedy series for Fleabag and Michelle Williams was recognized for her work in Fosse/Verdon on the TV side. But there were also some surprises, including Fosse/Verdon co-star Sam Rockwell beating out Jared Harris for lead actor in a TV movie or limited series, and The Morning Show‘s Jennifer Aniston’s win over Olivia Colman and Helena Bonham Carter for Outstanding Performance By A Female Actress In A Drama Series. Aniston used the closing seconds of her speech to shout out Murder Mystery co-star Adam Sandler’s work in Uncut Gems, which was not recognized by the Screen Actors Guild – or the Academy – with a nomination.

Perhaps the biggest highlight of the night – at least if social media was the judge – was Brad Pitt’s acceptance speech, during which the actor got candid about his personal life and delivered the evening’s best line, a gentle dig at director Quentin Tarantino’s obsession with his actress’s feet: “Quentin has separated more women from their shoes than the TSA!”. And there were two more noteworthy standing ovations, firstly for the cast of Parasite, who introduced that film as a nominee for Outstanding Performance By A Cast In A Motion Picture before their shock win, and then for Robert De Niro, who received the Life Achievement Award from DiCaprio.
