On DVD This Week: Kong: Skull Island, Free Fire, and More

Headlining this week’s new releases on the DVD market are a pair of very different movies that both happen to star Brie Larson: the latest in Warner Bros.’ giant monster universe and a compact action comedy about a botched arms deal. We’ve also got a couple of well-received seasons of TV, an unusual thriller, and something from the Criterion Collection. Read on for the full list.

The Expanse: Season 2 (2017) 95%

Thomas Jane and Steven Strait star in this adaptation of the best-selling novel series that takes place in the future and documents rising tensions between Earth, Mars, and the resource-rich Asteroid Belt. The season 2 set comes with selected episode commentary tracks, a tribute to the show’s fans, a look at the series’ powerful women, and more.

The 100: Season 4 (2017) 92%

This CW sci-fi series centers on a group of juvenile delinquents who are sent back to a post-apocalyptic Earth to see if it is habitable again. The season 4 set comes with the show’s 2016 Comic-Con panel, deleted scenes, a gag reel, and a handful of featurettes focusing on different aspects of the series.

Kong: Skull Island (2017) 75%

Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, and John Goodman star in this reimagining of the classic tale, which finds a group of adventurers traveling to a secret island where giant creatures live, untouched by humanity, and one ape in particular reigns supreme. Special features include a commentary track with director Jordan Vogt-Roberts, inside looks at the creature creation, a profile of Hiddleston’s character, and more.

Free Fire (2017) 68%

Cillian Murphy, Armie Hammer, and Brie Larson (again) star in this action comedy about an arms deal that goes wrong and results in a violent shootout. It comes with a commentary track and a making-of featurette.

Buster's Mal Heart (2017) 71%

Rami Malek and Kate Lyn Sheil star in this thriller about a mentally unstable man on the run from authorities whose story slowly unfolds through visions of his past. It comes with a handful of deleted scenes.

  • This week, from the Criterion Collection, we have a new restoration of Andrei Tarkovsky‘s post-apocalyptic 1979 sci-fi mystery Stalker, about a guide who leads two men into a restricted area to find a mysterious room rumored to grant a person’s innermost desires. It comes with one new interview, as well as interviews from 2002 with the film’s cinematographer, set designer, and composer. — Get it Here
