Movies dominate Hulu in July led by the Andy Samberg–Cristin Milioti rom-com Palm Springs, in which a wedding puts two souls on a time-warped collision course.

Fresh indie films offer moving drama for the summer season: The Assistant, starring Julia Garner, about the degradations of administrative work in Hollywood; a family led by a single mom (Heather Graham, pictured) finds unlikely shelter in The Rest of Us; a tale of young friendship in To The Stars, starring Kara Hayward and Liana Liberato; and the unlikely connection between an old bullfighter and a wayward teen in Bull. Plus, filmmaker Raoul Peck interprets the unfinished work of James Baldwin in Oscar-nominated documentary I Am Not Your Negro, narrated by Samuel L. Jackson.

Read on to find out what TV series and films are premiering in July — and which are leaving!

To the Stars (2020) 81%

Description: In a god-fearing small town in 1960s Oklahoma, bespectacled and reclusive teen Iris endures the booze-induced antics of her mother and daily doses of bullying from her classmates. She finds solace in Maggie, the charismatic and enigmatic new girl at school, who hones in on Iris’s untapped potential and coaxes her out of her shell. When Maggie’s mysterious past can no longer be suppressed, the tiny community is thrown into a state of panic, leaving Maggie to take potentially drastic measures and inciting Iris to stand up for her friend and herself.

Critics Consensus: Its reach may occasionally exceed its grasp, but To the Stars uses its period setting as an effective backdrop for an insightful look at female friendship.

Premiere Date: July 4

I Am Not Your Negro (2017) 99%

Description: In 1979, James Baldwin wrote a letter to his literary agent describing his next project, Remember This House. The book was to be a revolutionary, personal account of the lives and successive assassinations of three of his close friends: Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. At the time of Baldwin’s death in 1987, he left behind only 30 completed pages of his manuscript. Now, in his incendiary new documentary, master filmmaker Raoul Peck envisions the book James Baldwin never finished. The result is a radical, up-to-the-minute examination of race in America, using Baldwin’s original words and flood of rich archival material. I Am Not Your Negro is a journey into black history that connects the past of the Civil Rights movement to the present of #BlackLivesMatter. It is a film that questions black representation in Hollywood and beyond. And, ultimately, by confronting the deeper connections between the lives and assassination of these three leaders, Baldwin and Peck have produced a work that challenges the very definition of what America stands for.

Premiere Date: July 4

Palm Springs (2020) 94%

Description: When carefree Nyles (Andy Samberg) and reluctant maid of honor Sarah (Cristin Milioti) have a chance encounter at a Palm Springs wedding, things get complicated when they find themselves unable to escape the venue, themselves, or each other.

Critics Consensus: Strong performances, assured direction, and a refreshingly original concept make Palm Springs a rom-com that’s easy to fall in love with.

Premiere Date: July 10

The Assistant (2020) 92%

Description: The Assistant follows one day in the life of Jane (Julia Garner), a recent college graduate and aspiring film producer, who has recently landed her dream job as a junior assistant to a powerful entertainment mogul. Her day is much like any other assistant’s — making coffee, changing the paper in the copy machine, ordering lunch, arranging travel, taking phone messages, onboarding a new hire. But as Jane follows her daily routine, she, and we, grow increasingly aware of the abuse that insidiously colors every aspect of her work day, an accumulation of degradations against which Jane decides to take a stand, only to discover the true depth of the system into which she has entered.

Critics Consensus: Led by a powerhouse performance from Julia Garner, The Assistant offers a withering critique of workplace harassment and systemic oppression.

Premiere Date: July 20

Bull (2020) 91%

Description: In a near-abandoned subdivision west of Houston, a wayward teen runs headlong into her equally willful and unforgiving neighbor, an aging bullfighter who’s seen his best days in the arena; it’s a collision that will change them both

Critics Consensus: An intimate two-hander anchored by a pair of well-matched actors, Bull takes an achingly empathetic look at life on the economic margins.
