New on Amazon Prime Video in December 2020

Original films I'm Your Woman, Sound of Metal and Sylvie's Love, plus season five of The Expanse are just a few of the many films, TV series and specials joining Amazon Prime Video in December.

Someone must have been very good this year, because Amazon Prime Video has plenty of presents this December: original movies include Sound of Metal, starring Riz Ahmed as a drummer suffering hearing loss and Olivia Cooke as his recovering heroin addict girlfriend and bandmate; I’m Your Woman, a 1970s crime drama starring Rachel Brosnahan as a suburban housewife forced on the run when her thief husband betrays his partners; and Sylvie’s Love, a romance set in 1950s Harlem starring Tessa Thompson.

Then there are the series — highlights include the fifth season of sci-fi hit The Expanse, plus new YA drama The Wilds. (Archive shows headed to Prime this month include all five seasons of early 2000s classic The Bernie Mac Show, and all eight seasons of ’90s sitcom Mad About You, including the 2019 revival.)

Other new additions include the 2020 Valley Girl remake; Blackbird, starring Susan Sarandon as a dying woman hosting her family for one last time; A League of their Own; Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle and its sequel; and the 2009 animated hit Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. Two more of Sean Connery’s James Bond classics, Dr. No and Goldfinger, head back to the streaming service with many of the rest of the late actor’s Bond titles.

Keep reading to find out what else is new on Amazon Prime Video in December, with some highlights noted at the top.

HIGHLIGHTS

Sound of Metal (2020)

97%

Description: During a series of adrenaline-fueled one-night gigs, itinerant punk-metal drummer Ruben (Riz Ahmed) begins to experience intermittent hearing loss. When a specialist tells him his condition will rapidly worsen, he thinks his music career — and with it his life — is over. His bandmate and girlfriend Lou (Olivia Cooke) checks the recovering heroin addict into a secluded sober house for the deaf in hopes it will prevent a relapse and help him learn to adapt to his new situation. But after being welcomed into a community that accepts him just as he is, Ruben has to choose between his equilibrium and the drive to reclaim the life he once knew. Utilizing startling, innovative sound design techniques, director Darius Marder takes audiences inside Ruben’s experience to vividly recreate his journey into a rarely examined world.

Critics Consensus: An evocative look at the experiences of the deaf community, Sound of Metal is brought to life by Riz Ahmed’s passionate performance.

Premiere Date: December 4

The Wilds: Season 1 (2020)

92%

Description: Part survival drama, part dystopic slumber party, The Wilds follows a group of teen girls from different backgrounds who must fight for survival after a plane crash strands them on a deserted island. The castaways both clash and bond as they learn more about each other, the secrets they keep, and the traumas they’ve all endured. There’s just one twist to this thrilling drama: these girls did not end up on this island by accident.

Premiere Date: December 11

I'm Your Woman (2020)

80%

Description: A decidedly female take on crime dramas of the 1970s, I’m Your Woman is a tale of love, betrayal, motherhood—and what it takes to claim your life as your own. Suburban housewife Jean (Rachel Brosnahan) lives a seemingly easy life, supported by husband Eddie’s (Bill Heck) career as a thief. But when Eddie betrays his partners, Jean and her baby are forced to go on the run, and Eddie’s old friend Cal (Arinzé Kene) is tasked with keeping them safe. After Cal mysteriously disappears, Jean befriends his wife Teri (Marsha Stephanie Blake) and the two women set out on a perilous journey into the heart of Eddie’s criminal underworld.

Critics Consensus: Smart, sophisticated, and subversive, I’m Your Woman is brought to life by a powerful performance from Rachel Brosnahan — and finds director Julia Hart in near-total command of her craft.

Premiere Date: December 11

The Expanse: Season 5 (2020)

100%

Description: Season five of The Expanse picks up as multitudes of humans leave the solar system in search of new homes and vast fortunes on the earth-like worlds beyond the alien Ring, and a heavy price for centuries of exploitation of the Belt finally comes due and a reckoning is at hand. For the crew of the Rocinante and the leaders of the Inner Planets and the Belt, the past and present converge, bringing forth personal challenges that have wide-reaching repercussions throughout the Solar System. Amos (Wes Chatham) returns to Earth to confront his past and the legacy of the life he fought to leave behind. Naomi (Dominique Tipper) reaches out to her estranged son in a desperate bid to save him from his father’s toxic influence. Bobbie (Frankie Adams) and Alex (Cas Anvar) confront the collapse of Mars as they chase a shadowy cabal with ties to terrorists and criminals. Holden (Steven Strait) wrestles with the consequences of his own past with the Protomolecule, the aliens who built it, and the mystery of what killed them. Drummer (Cara Gee), with a new crew, fights to escape who and what she used to be. And Avasarala (Shohreh Aghdashloo), refusing to be relegated to the sidelines, fights to prevent a terrorist attack unrivaled in history.

Premiere Date: December 16

Sylvie's Love (2020)

93%

Description: Written and directed by Eugene Ashe, Sylvie’s Love combines romance and music into a sweeping story that brings together changing times, a changing culture, and the true price of love. Set in the summer of 1957, aspiring television producer Sylvie (Tessa Thompson) and saxophonist Robert (Nnamdi Asomugha) first meet and fall for one another. Time and circumstances pull them apart, but years later they meet again by chance, only to find that while their lives have changed, their feelings for each other remain the same.

Premiere Date: December 25
