The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the winners of the 77th Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night and it was a night of shocks – and not just from Ricky Gervais’ many, many barbs. (Repeat after us, “I don’t care!”). It was apparent this was going to be a night of upsets from the very first award, when Ramy Youssef beat out the likes of Bill Hader and Michael Douglas for Best Performance By An Actor In a Television Series – Musical of Comedy. The surprises just kept coming from there: Missing Link beating out Toy Story 4 in the animated film category; Russell Crowe beating Jared Harris for lead role in a limited series of made-for-TV movie; 1917 winning Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Director for Sam Mendes.

On the TV side, wins were fairly evenly spread out, with ChernobylFleabag and Succession all winning two Golden Globes each. In the film categories, the night’s biggest winner was Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, with three wins total, including for Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. It was followed by Rocketman1917, and Joker with two wins each, including Joaquin Phoenix’s Best Actor – Drama win for the latter. Rocketman‘s Taron Egerton won the corresponding award for musical or comedy, while Awkwafina and Renee Zellweger took top Actress honors for Comedy or Musical and Drama, respectively.

Marriage Story, which had entered the night with six nominations, managed just one win – for Laura Dern for Best Supporting Actress – while Netflix’s other big awards play, The Irishman, went home empty-handed. Parasite, largely tipped as an Oscar frontrunner, won Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language. Is it still the one to beat?
