Feud: Bette and Joan Fans React to Baby Jane Reviews and Oscar Competition

In "More, or Less," Davis and Crawford's rivalry heats up as their film hits theaters.

Are you ready to be halfway done with Feud: Bette and Joan? Because the fans definitely aren’t ready for the season to be half over — but it is. In “More, or Less,” filming for What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? has wrapped, and now it’s a matter of how it will do at the box office and with critics. Here’s how fans reacted to the episode on Twitter.

SPOILER WARNING: Do not read if you haven’t seen episode 4 of Feud: Bette and Joan.

The Next Steps

Before Baby Jane opened and was a huge hit, Bette Davis (Susan Sarandon) and Joan Crawford (Jessica Lange) couldn’t get any other work in Hollywood — the buzz on the movie wasn’t great and they were so “old.”

But one opportunity does present itself to Crawford. Aldrich’s (Alfred Molina) assistant Pauline (Alison Wright) writes a movie and wants to direct it, with Crawford as the star. It’s called The Black Slipper.

Mamacita (Jackie Hoffman) thinks it’s a great idea and pushes Crawford hard to go for it — and so do the Feud fans; they love the idea.

Or perhaps the Feud fans just love the idea of a spinoff for Pauline and Mamacita, which would be totally amazing.

But Crawford thinks the idea of working for a female director — and a nobody, no less — sounds insane.

The Reviews Are In

Maybe she shouldn’t have been so quick to turn down the offer, though. Because when the rave reviews are in for Baby Jane, Davis is the actress getting all the mentions and accolades. Even from studio head Jack Warner.

Joan is so bitter about the critical acclaim Davis is receiving that she refuses to do the cross-country promotional tour with Davis, so Davis does it by herself — including an appearance on The Andy Williams Show that Sarandon recreated perfectly for Feud.

Joan’s Descent

Crawford just keeps spiraling deeper and deeper into her vodka bottle, because she sees Davis as having essentially stolen the film that was Joan’s idea in the first place. And as anyone familiar with the real history knows, when the Oscar nominations are announced… it ain’t pretty.

What will Joan do next? We’ll have to wait until next week to find out what Crawford has planned in retaliation.

Feud: Bette and Joan airs Sundays at 10 p.m. on FX
