Joker Leads 2020 BAFTA Nominations, As Margot Robbie and Scarlett Johansson Score Double Chances

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has caused a stir with a slew of nominations for The Irishman, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood and some conspicuous snubs.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) 2020 film nominations were announced late last night. Todd Phillips’ Joker led the pack of nominees with 11 nominations, including for Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix, fresh off of his Golden Globes victory. Once Upon A Time in Hollywood and The Irishman both followed with 10 nominations each and Sam Mendes’ World War I epic and newly minted Golden Globe winner 1917 earned nine nominations, including for Best Film, Best Director, and Best Cinematography for iconic cinematographer Roger Deakins.

Though we saw many familiar and expected names among the nominees, an acting slate without a single performer of color did not go unnoticed, particularly in a year that featured the award-worthy work of Golden Globe-winner Awkwafina (The Farewell) – who did pick up a Rising Star nomination – along with Lupita Nyong’o (Us), Jennifer Lopez (Hustlers), and British actress Cynthia Erivo (Harriet). Surprise double nominations for Scarlett Johansson and Margot Robbie (the latter in the same category, Supporting Actress), may have squeezed out some of those names. The Oscar nominations come out next Monday, January 13, and it will be interesting to see whether the American Academy goes a different route.

See the full list of nominees below and let us know what you think of the BAFTA picks below.
